据报道，该基地在社交平台上称，事故发生在“枪手天空”航展的第二天，发生地位于基地西北约2英里（3.22千米）处。
美国太平洋舰队海军航空兵发言人乌马亚姆（Amelia Umayam）表示，事故发生于当地时间17日中午12时10分，当时4名机组人员正在进行飞行表演。在空中相撞的是美国海军两架E/A-18G型“咆哮者”舰载电子战飞机，隶属于驻扎在华盛顿州惠德贝岛的第129电子攻击中队（VAQ-129）。
乌马亚姆称，4名机组人员全部弹射逃生，目前正在接受医务人员的评估。
基地官员称，机组人员情况稳定，没有其他人受伤的报告。
据悉，芒廷霍姆空军基地是美国空军第366战斗机联队（绰号“枪手”）的驻地。该基地已于当地时间17日中午12时30分宣布封锁。
基地方面表示，应急人员已抵达现场，调查正在进行中。
据报道，社交平台上流传的视频显示，两架战斗机在空中相撞后，旋转着落向地面，现场黑烟滚滚。有四顶降落伞在空中打开。
当地警方当地时间17日宣布航展取消，并警告公众避免前往该基地。
美国每年大约举办200场航展活动，航展行业多年来一直致力于提高这些活动的安全性。
国际航展委员会主席库达希（John Cudahy）表示，从1991年到2006年，在美国航展上平均每年有3.8人死亡。这一数字一直在稳步改善，自2017年以来，在美国航展上平均每年死亡1.1人。
